What is Churn Risk?
Churn risk is an assessment of the probability that a customer account will reduce its usage, downgrade its contract, or not renew at all. It is a forward-looking signal, not a current-state report the goal is to identify accounts that are headed toward churn while there is still time to intervene.
Churn risk is distinct from churn itself. A customer flagged as high churn risk has not yet churned, but the signals in their account declining engagement, unresolved issues, executive disengagement suggest they may without intervention.
Why Churn Risk Matters
Every churned customer represents lost recurring revenue, lost expansion potential, and the cost of acquiring a new customer to replace them. Churn risk identification is the mechanism that allows revenue teams to be proactive addressing issues when they are still fixable rather than learning about them from a cancellation notice.
Key Churn Risk Indicators
- Declining product usage or login frequency over 60 to 90 days
- Executive sponsor departure or role change
- Open support escalations without resolution
- Competitor evaluation signals from conversation data
- Missed or repeatedly rescheduled check-ins
- Low NPS score or declining sentiment in calls
- Contract value significantly above current usage levels
How MaxIQ Helps
MaxIQ continuously monitors churn risk signals across all accounts, surfacing high-risk accounts before the renewal cycle begins. Instead of relying on end-of-period manual reviews, MaxIQ gives Customer Success and Sales teams an always-on view of which accounts need attention and why.
Example
A customer showed strong engagement in their first year, but over the past 90 days product logins have dropped by 60%, the original champion has moved to a different team, and two support tickets remain unresolved. MaxIQ flags this account as high churn risk giving the CS team 90 days before renewal to re-engage, resolve issues, and establish a new executive relationship.
